About Mrs. Dawson I have wanted to be a teacher since I was a small child. And even though my older brother and I fought all the time, we would often play school. I always had to be the teacher. If school wasn't in session, my family was camping. This is what led to Camp Dawson. I still love the outdoors and can be found there with my family either on the beach, the boat, or on the mountains. I have been teaching in the Okanagan for 12 years after moving from the coast where I taught for 6 years and completed my Masters in Education with a focus on Literacy and Special Education. I have worked as a classroom teacher grades 1-7, as a Literacy Intervention Specialist, Learning Disabilities Reading Teacher and a Special Education Teacher. This will be my fifth year at Helen Gorman Elementary and I love the students, staff and parents. My son and daughter both attend HGE and are in grade 4 and 2.
I was granted the SET BC iPad project in 2016, so your child will have technology at his or her fingertips everyday. I use the iPads cross-curricularly and even hope to have the children coding by the end of the year. So much fun! As for the great outdoors, I strongly embrace the values of inquiry and place based learning. "Place-based education is the process of using the local community and environment as a starting point to teach concepts in language arts, mathematics, social studies, science and other subjects across the curriculum. Emphasizing hands-on, real-world learning experiences, this approach to education increases academic achievement, helps students develop stronger ties to their community, enhances students’ appreciation for the natural world, and creates a heightened commitment to serving as active, contributing citizens." Lastly, I just want you to know how excited I am to welcome your child into Camp Dawson. My motto is to have every child smiling, learning and loving coming to school everyday. Let the adventure begin! |
